re: Holy Paladin Guide

Hey there BoD!

Thought I’d swing by and lend a hand to anyone who has an up an coming Holy Paladin or perhaps was thinking about starting one with a little guide.

Holy Paladins can be absolutely fantastic if you know how to play them properly, and they are arguably the top focus healers in the game right now.

So, I am going to break it down piece by piece of what I feel you can do to improve your character and get the most out of them. Keep in mind that this is only a guide, and your own individual play style might be different. Feel free to tweak things as you feel necessary to work the best for you.

I’ll go over Gems, Enchants, notable spells, and a basic stat priority for now.
Stat Priority:

Intellect > Spirit > Haste > Crit > Mastery

Intellect is your main stat, it will increase almost every important aspect of your character. With high intellect comes higher mana pools, larger heals, and more damage on your offensive spells as well.

Spirit is important for mana regeneration. In PvE aspects of the game you are going to want enough spirit that you’re never running out of mana (provided that you are using all available spells to increase your mana, I’ll go over those later). It is an extremely useful stat, but it also can be reforged off if you are finding that you are able to manage your mana efficiently enough for it to not be an issue.

Haste rating will affect the speed at which you cast your spells, as well as the cooldown between spells. Haste can even lower the global cooldown thereby making it so that you are getting the most spells off in a set amount of time as possible. Remember, especially in emergency situations, the faster you cast, the more likely it is that your target will stay alive. Also note that the more spells per minute you’re throwing out there, the more overall healing you end up doing. Just watch your mana pool.

Crit is currently not as important as your other stats, however if you have reached a comfortable point in your stat setting with the above stats, then crit can still be quite useful to you. Currently every time you critically heal a target, you will heal for 1.5 times your normal healing output. In the next patch however, they are increasing that to 2 times normal. When you add in the fact that many of the useful procs for Holy Paladins come from a critical heal, it’s not a bad idea to stack some of this.

Mastery for Holy Paladins, while interesting, is not quite good enough to be sacrificing other stats in favour of it. What the mastery does is form a shield around your target that blocks X amount of damage after you heal them. However the amount of damage that gets saved is not really worth putting the points into mastery that could otherwise go into haste or even crit. For now just get rid of as much of it as you can.

Gems:
Red Socket – Brilliant Inferno Ruby (+40 Intellect)

Blue Socket – Purified Demonseye (+20 Intellect, +20 Spirit), or Sparkiling Ocean Sapphire (+40 Spirit)

Yellow Socket – Quick Amberjewel (+40 Haste), or Reckless Ember Topaz (+20 Intellect, +20 Haste)

Meta Socket – Ember Shadowspirit Diamond (+54 Intellect, +2% maximum mana)

Enchants:
For the most part we are going to be looking for the enchants that give us intellect or haste. That will cover almost all of the enchantable items that you will be wearing. This is a list of the top enchants that you should be looking for, feel free to pick and choose to your liking.

Head – Arcanum of Hyjal (+60 Intellect and 35 Crit),or Arcanum of Vicious (+60 Intellect and 35 Resilience)

Shoulders – Greater Inscription Of Charged Lodestone (+50 Intellect and 25 Haste), or Felfire Inscription (+130 Intellect and 25 Haste), or Greater Inscription of Vicious Intellect (+50 Intellect and 25 Resilience)

Chest – Enchant Chest - Peerless Stats (+20 to all stats), or Enchant Chest - Mighty Resilience (+40 Resilience)

Legs – Powerful Enchanted Spellthread (+95 Intellect and +80 Stamina) or Powerful Ghostly Spellthread (+95 Intellect and +55 Spirit)

Boots – Enchant Boots - Haste (+50 Haste Rating)

Bracers –Enchant Bracers - Mighty Intellect (+50 Intellect) or Enchant bracers - Greater Speed (+65 Haste) or Exceptional Spirit (+50 Spirit)

Gloves – Enchant Gloves - Haste (+50 Haste)

Cloak – Enchant Cloak - Greater Intellect (+50 Intellect)

Weapon – Power Torrent (Chance to increase Intellect by 500 for 12 seconds) or Heartsong (Chance to increase Spirit by 200 for 15 seconds)

Shield – Enchant Off-Hand – Superior Intellect (+40 Intellect)

Spells:

For most cases your go-to spell is going to be Divine Light. It has a massive healing output and is the most mana efficient. It does take a bit of time to cast however, and that’s where all that haste you should be gemming and reforging for comes in.

You should make sure that your Seal of Insight is always up, because with it comes our best shot at combat mana regen: Judgement. If you are using Judgement every time the cooldown is up, you will be having significantly less problems with mana efficiency as well as getting a nice boost in haste from it.
Another spell you should be using at every available opportunity is Holy Shock. It is an instant low mana cost spell that is surprisingly powerful, and also serves as a proc for Infusion of Light which will speed up your Divine Light and Holy Light spells.

Word of Glory is a good spell to use when you have 3 charges of Holy Power. It will heal around as much as Holy Light will, but on an instant cast, and at no mana cost. If you glyph for it and spec into Last Word, it can also be a really good emergency heal when your target is getting to below 35%.

Holy Radiance a good AoE heal, causing all friendly target around you to be healed for around 1-2k hp per second, depending on how far away from you they are. As an added bonus if you specced into Speed of Light, when you cast it you will move at +60% movement speed for 4 seconds, allowing you to position yourself quickly where you are needed, and also get out of the way of powerful attacks coming your way.

Well, that’s all for now. If you have any more questions, feel free to whisper Damarus in-game, and I’ll be glad to help if I can.

Also, if there was something you wanted to know that I didn’t cover, head on over to www.arenajunkies.com to look up their paladin pvp guide, or www.elitistjerks.com for all of their wonderful info.
